Engineers who have been recruited by the Indian Government and are classified as Class-I officers constitute the Indian Engineering Services (IES) or Engineering Services Examination (ESE). They are in charge of a sizable portion of the public sector economy, which includes, among others, Indian Railways, Power, Telecommunications, Central Water Engineering, and the Engineers' Service for the Defence.
Officers appointed through ESE are required to direct and coordinate various technical operations. In a wide range of economic sectors and infrastructure, such as Railways, Roads, Defence, Manufacturing, Inspection, Supply, Building, Public works, Power, and Telecommunications, Government spending accounts for more than 15% of India's gross domestic product. The President of India appoints candidates to hold these positions.
The realm of work these bureaucrats do is mostly determined by the Engineering branch they are in and the service or cadre they were selected into. The advancement of the career is smooth, leading to high regard. The Asst. Executive Engineer position is the first one available, while the Chairman/Managing Director position is where the hierarchy comes to a conclusion.
The Government has decided to include the Engineering streams (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Signal & Telecommunication and Stores Sub-cadres) of Indian Railway Management Service as participating services in the Engineering Services, Examination, 2025. As such the one week correction / Edit Window, which was scheduled to be opened from 09 October, 2024, has been put on hold. The same will be available on UPSC Website shortly, alongwith opening of the online application windown for fresh candidates who want to participate in this examination.
